• Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav have called on states to take immediate action to prevent stubble burning during the ongoing paddy harvest. During an inter-ministerial review meeting in New Delhi, the ministers emphasised the need for accessible and affordable alternatives to crop residue burning. The Centre has provided over ₹4,266 crore under the Crop Residue Management scheme since 2018, with ₹592.57 crore allocated for FY 2026-
• Haryana has seen a 53.3% reduction in stubble burning incidents, while Uttar Pradesh recorded a 32% decline. However, incidents have increased in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, prompting calls for special action plans. The Centre has also distributed over 3.54 lakh crop residue management machines to states.

Impact & Risks

Stubble burning contributes significantly to air pollution, particularly in the National Capital Region (NCR), by releasing harmful particulate matter and greenhouse gases. This practice also depletes soil nutrients and destroys beneficial organisms. While some states have shown improvement, others like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have reported an increase in incidents, posing risks to air quality and public health. The lack of functional machinery and slow utilisation of allocated funds could hinder efforts to curb this issue.
